Historic charm, panoramic views, and character you will not find anywhere else.

Upper Town is Gibraltar's oldest inhabited area, clinging to the western slope of the Rock and offering some of the most dramatic views on the peninsula. The streets here are narrow and steep, lined with a mix of traditional Gibraltar townhouses, converted flats, and older residential buildings that give the area a character no modern development can replicate. This is where Gibraltar's history is most visible, with remnants of the old fortifications, Moorish Castle sections, and centuries of architectural layers all around.

Living in Upper Town means accepting certain practicalities: cars are not always practical on the steeper streets, and carrying shopping up flights of steps is part of daily life for some residents. In return, you get views that stretch across the Bay of Gibraltar to Spain, a genuine sense of neighbourhood, and rental prices that are lower than the marina developments. Many long-term Gibraltar residents and local families live here, giving the area an authenticity that newer parts of town lack.

The town centre and Main Street are reachable on foot downhill in around 10-15 minutes. The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is essentially on the doorstep, meaning residents can walk to Gibraltar's famous Barbary Macaques and the Great Siege Tunnels without getting in a car. Upper Town is not for everyone, but for those who value character, views, and community over modern convenience, it remains one of the most rewarding places to live in Gibraltar.
