Casemates

Casemates Square is the historical northern entrance to Gibraltar, a large open piazza that has served as the town square for centuries and today functions as the main social hub of the territory. Named after the historic military casemates that once occupied the site, the square is ringed by restaurants, cafes, and bars, and hosts markets, concerts, and community events throughout the year. It is the first significant landmark most people encounter when entering Gibraltar from Spain on foot.

Living in and around Casemates means having a front-row seat to Gibraltar's social life. The square itself is lively from morning to evening, and many of the residential properties are in converted historic buildings that have been modernised to varying degrees. The northern end of Main Street extends from Casemates, making the entire town centre walking distance. The Gibraltar border is also the closest it gets for any residential area on the Rock, which makes Casemates popular with cross-border workers.

The residential offer around Casemates is a mix of converted older buildings and some more modern flats on the surrounding streets. Rents are among the lower end of the Gibraltar market given the peripheral position relative to the southern residential zones, while still offering excellent central access. The main consideration is the noise and activity of the square, which can be lively during peak hours and events.
