Eating and Drinking in Gibraltar: A Renter's Guide to the Food Scene

Food and drink. It's one of those things that genuinely affects how much you enjoy living somewhere. And Gibraltar, despite being only 6.7 square kilometres, has a food scene that's way more interesting than most people expect.

This isn't a restaurant review list (places open and close, and we don't want to send you somewhere that's shut). Instead, this is an area-by-area guide to where you'll eat, what it costs, and how to feed yourself without burning through your rent money.

The Main Dining Districts

Casemates Square

Casemates Square is Gibraltar's main social hub, and it's where most people end up for a night out. The square is ringed with restaurants and bars, and on a warm evening the whole place fills with people eating al fresco.

You'll find a mix of British pub food, Mediterranean, Indian, and international cuisine. Quality varies. Some spots are excellent, others lean more towards tourist-friendly. The trick is asking locals where they actually eat, not just where the biggest signs are.

Average meal cost: £12 to £20 per person for a main course. A pint runs around £4 to £6. A full dinner for two with drinks will typically land between £50 and £80.

Best for: Nights out, group dinners, catching live music or events in the square.

Ocean Village Marina

Ocean Village has the most concentrated collection of upmarket dining in Gibraltar. The restaurants here face the marina, and eating with a view of the boats and the water makes everything taste better.

The cuisine tends to be more refined than Casemates. You'll find Italian, seafood, Asian fusion, steakhouses, and cocktail bars. It's the place to go if you want a proper dinner rather than just a quick bite.

Average meal cost: £15 to £30 per person for a main. Cocktails run £8 to £12. Dinner for two can easily reach £70 to £120 if you're going all in.

Best for: Date nights, waterfront dining, impressing visitors, Sunday brunch.

Main Street and Side Streets

The pedestrianised Main Street and its side alleys are where you'll find Gibraltar's more casual eating spots. Coffee shops, sandwich bars, bakeries, and smaller restaurants that cater more to locals than tourists.

This is where you'll do your weekday lunches and morning coffees. Prices are reasonable, portions are generous, and the atmosphere is laid-back.

Average meal cost: £8 to £15 for lunch. Coffee and a pastry for £3 to £5.

Best for: Lunch breaks, coffee catch-ups, casual meals.

Queensway Quay

Just south of Ocean Village, Queensway Quay has its own cluster of waterfront restaurants. Slightly quieter than Ocean Village, with a more intimate feel. Several of Gibraltar's most well-regarded restaurants are located here.

Average meal cost: Similar to Ocean Village. £15 to £25 per person for mains.

Best for: Quieter waterfront dining, special occasions.

What Cuisines Will You Find?

Gibraltar's mix of British and Mediterranean culture, plus its large international community, means the food variety is surprisingly broad:

  • British: Pub grub, fish and chips, full English breakfasts. Available everywhere, especially around Casemates.
  • Mediterranean/Spanish: Tapas, seafood, grilled meats. The Spanish influence is strong, and some of the best food in Gibraltar draws on Andalusian cooking.
  • Indian: Gibraltar has a significant Indian community, and the Indian restaurants here are genuinely good. Often cited as some of the best food on the Rock.
  • Italian: Pizza and pasta spots are scattered across every dining area. Quality ranges from basic to excellent.
  • Asian: Japanese, Chinese, and Thai options are available, mainly in Ocean Village and around town.
  • Fast food: The usual chains are present (McDonald's, Burger King), plus plenty of local takeaways for kebabs, pizza slices, and fried chicken.

Grocery Shopping: How to Save Money

Eating out every night gets expensive fast. Most renters in Gibraltar do a mix of cooking at home and eating out, and smart grocery shopping makes a real difference to your monthly budget.

Supermarkets in Gibraltar

The main supermarkets are Eroski and Morrison's, plus several smaller shops scattered around. Prices are roughly comparable to UK supermarkets, sometimes a bit higher for imported goods.

A basic weekly shop for one person will run about £40 to £70 depending on your habits. If you're buying premium products, imported items, or lots of fresh meat, expect to spend more.

The La Linea Trick

This is the open secret of Gibraltar living. Walk across the border to La Linea and you'll find Mercadona and other Spanish supermarkets where prices are noticeably cheaper, especially for:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Meat and fish
  • Wine and beer
  • Dairy products
  • Olive oil and other staples

Many Gibraltar renters do a big shop in Spain once a week and top up with smaller purchases locally. It's a 10 to 15 minute walk from the border to the main shopping area in La Linea, and the savings can easily reach 30 to 40% on your grocery bill.

Keep in mind: There are limits on how much you can bring back across the border, particularly for alcohol and tobacco. Check the current rules before loading up a trolley.

Drinking Culture

Gibraltar has a relaxed drinking culture. People enjoy a drink but it's not excessive. The pub and bar scene centres around Casemates Square, Ocean Village, and a handful of spots on Main Street.

Beer prices: £4 to £6 for a pint in most places. Ocean Village tends to be at the higher end.

Wine: Available everywhere. House wine at restaurants runs £12 to £20 a bottle. For home drinking, supermarket wine is reasonable, and Spanish wine from La Linea is even cheaper.

Cocktails: The cocktail bar scene is small but growing, mainly concentrated in Ocean Village. Expect to pay £8 to £14 per cocktail.

Happy hours: Several bars and restaurants run happy hour deals, especially on weekday evenings. Worth asking about wherever you go.

Monthly Food Budget: What to Expect

Here's a realistic breakdown for a single person renting in Gibraltar:

  • Cooking at home mostly: £200 to £300/month on groceries (less if you shop in Spain)
  • Eating out 2 to 3 times a week: £150 to £250/month
  • Drinks and socialising: £80 to £150/month
  • Total: Roughly £400 to £700/month for food and drink

Couples will spend more in absolute terms but less per person. If you're on a tight budget, cooking at home with Spanish supermarket groceries and limiting dining out to once a week can bring your food costs down to under £250/month.

Tips for New Renters

  • Ask your neighbours: The best food recommendations in Gibraltar come from locals and long-term residents, not online reviews.
  • Try the local dishes: Calentita (a chickpea flour bake), rosto (a pasta dish), and fideos (a vermicelli dish) are Gibraltarian specialities worth seeking out.
  • Lunch is better value than dinner: Many restaurants offer lunch specials that are significantly cheaper than their evening menus.
  • La Linea tapas: Cross the border for some of the best and cheapest tapas you'll find anywhere. Seriously, it's worth the walk.
  • Delivery apps: Available in Gibraltar, though the range is more limited than in a big city. Useful for lazy evenings.

Food is a big part of enjoying life in Gibraltar. Get it right and your weekly spending stays manageable while you eat well. Get it wrong and you'll wonder where your money went.
