Pet-Friendly Rentals in Gibraltar: How to Find a Home for You and Your Pet

Renting in Gibraltar with Pets

If you have a furry companion and you're looking to rent in Gibraltar, you'll need a strategy.

Many landlords in Gibraltar are hesitant about pets. Limited space, apartment living, and concerns about damage all play a role. But with the right approach, finding a pet-friendly rental in Gibraltar is absolutely possible.

Best Districts for Pet Owners

South District

The best choice for dog owners. Close to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve and open spaces near Europa Point.

Properties tend to have more outdoor space: balconies, terraces, or small gardens.

Eastside (Catalan Bay & Sandy Bay)

The village atmosphere of Catalan Bay is relatively pet-friendly, with beachside walks and a more relaxed lifestyle.

Note that dogs are generally not allowed on beaches during summer months.

Upper Town

Some period properties include small courtyards or roof terraces. The quieter streets are good for dog walking, though the steep terrain can be challenging for elderly pets.

How to Negotiate a Pet-Friendly Tenancy

  1. Be upfront: Always disclose your pet at the enquiry stage. Hiding a pet can result in eviction for breach of tenancy terms.
  2. Offer a higher deposit: An additional half-month or full month as a "pet deposit" reassures landlords.
  3. Provide references: A reference from a previous landlord confirming no pet damage is powerful.
  4. Show responsibility: Vaccination records, microchip details, and proof of pet insurance demonstrate responsible ownership.
  5. Agree to professional cleaning: Offering end-of-tenancy professional cleaning at your expense can tip the balance.

Bringing Pets to Gibraltar: Import Rules

Gibraltar's pet import regulations (verified via the Department of the Environment) require:

  • Microchip: ISO 11784/11785 compliant, 15-digit, non-encrypted. Must be implanted before rabies vaccination.
  • Rabies vaccination: Required, administered at least 21 days before entry.
  • From the UK: Animal Health Certificate with up-to-date vaccinations.
  • From non-EU/non-listed countries: Pet Passport plus blood test for rabies antibodies, taken at least 3 months before travel.
  • No quarantine required if all regulations are met.
  • No separate import permit required for dogs and cats from listed countries.

Local Pet Rules and Etiquette

  • Dogs must be kept on a lead in public areas
  • You are legally required to clean up after your dog
  • Dogs are generally not allowed on beaches during summer months
  • Certain dog breeds are banned. Contact the Environmental Agency for the current list.
  • Very few designated off-lead areas exist since Gibraltar is so compact
  • Barking complaints in apartment buildings are taken seriously

Barbary Macaques: Important Warning

Gibraltar's famous Barbary macaques are wild animals, not pets.

Since August 2020, it is illegal to touch or interfere with them. Feeding macaques is a criminal offence carrying fines of up to £4,000 (fixed penalties of £500 in the Nature Reserve or £250 outside).

Keep your pets well clear of macaque areas.
